Review: Aston Merrygold Tour, Belfast

Publish date: 2024-05-05

It may have been the last night of his headline UK and Ireland solo tour (April 18), but former JLS star Aston Merrygold certainly did not disappoint his Belfast fans. Keep reading to check out our review of the show!

Support acts Ryno and Jack Vandervelde got the crowd prepared for Aston. Both support acts put on a high-energy set, and had the crowd singing and dancing along.

During the DJ set, which featured songs from artists such as Chris Brown and Usher, the anticipation continued to rise for Aston.

To begin his high-energy set, the talented artist performed a mash-up of hits.

Aston then went on to perform tracks ‘Distraction’ and ‘Precious’ – definitely crowd pleasers. Both tracks are taken from his ‘Precious’ EP, which was released during 2017.

His set also featured several covers, with Aston putting his own unique spin on each which were particularly impressive.

Quite possibly one of the most poignant moments of the show was when Aston spoke with upmost adoration about his son, Grayson. He then went on to perform a song he had written for his son, which was extremely emotional and will no doubt serve as a beautiful memory for his little boy when he has grown up.

His set also featured tracks that fans hadn’t heard before, and this tour provided him with the opportunity to perform such tracks. No doubt many fans have been waiting for the release of a debut album for several years; hopefully the tracks performed on the tour will feature on the album!

Aston also performed his debut single ‘Get Stupid,’ released back in 2015. Since featuring on the Samsung advertisement, the track has returned to the Global Charts.

Not only did Aston show off his phenomenal vocal abilities and dancing skills, but he also showed off his rapping skills – something which he has kept seemingly hidden for a long time.

Another poignant moment during the show was Aston’s acknowledgement of his time in successful boy band JLS. This was marked by a nostalgic medley of hits, which started with the band’s audition playing in the background.

Going back to his roots and taking a trip down memory lane, Aston performed JLS tracks such as ‘Beat Again,’ ‘So Many Girls’ and ‘Superhero.’

With the crowd knowing every word to each and every JLS track he performed, it seemed that JLS will always hold a special place in many people’s hearts.

Aston ended his set with hit ‘I Ain’t Missing You’ – an energetic track, with an infectious, catchy beat.

Without a doubt, Aston’s talent is also a credit to his character. Throughout his set, he interacted with each and every member of the crowd. With phenomenal vocals, out of this world choreography, incredible rapping skills, wit and charm, Aston Merrygold’s 2018 tour sets the precedent for more well-deserved achievements in the next few months and years!
