Kmart DIY: Woman turns $20 coffee table into $2k luxury design for $115

Australians are showing off their impressive reno skills after a Kmart hack has proved popular online.

Fluted pillar tables can retail for over $2000 at designer stores, but savvy DIY fans are making their own versions for a fraction of the price using two $45 “ribbed” side tables from the discount retailer.

One woman showed off her stunning results in a post on Facebook, writing the coffee table she’d had her eye on cost $1000, but her own version came in at just $180.

After spending $90 on the Kmart side tables, Amy spent a further $90 on other items needed for the makeover from Bunnings – including chalk paint, the clear coat as well as filler and screws.

For the table top, Amy repurposed an old wooden desk that she cut to shape.

“The coffee table I was wanting was $1000 so I decided to make one,” she wrote Kmart hacks & decor group.

“Few stuff ups along the way but we got there in the end. I was going to paint the bottom white but decided to leave as wood as I haven’t seen any with the two tone before.”

Amy’s post quickly garnered attention, with many stating it was “incredible”, “clever” and “stunning”.

“Wow that’s awesome,” one said.

“That looks fabulous. Well done you,” another added.

One person added: “This is great! Well done.”

Previously, a Perth student shared how she made a fluted pillar coffee table after being “inspired” by the side-table hack on social media.

Lyla revealed she’d bought a $20 second-hand coffee table from Facebook Marketplace that she then sanded back and bleached.

Next she replaced the legs with two of the $45 Ribbed side tables from Kmart – costing her $115 in total to finish the transformation.

The interior decoration student said a similar version had been advertised for $2000 which she’d labelled “ridiculous” and her motivation for making one herself.

The results were so impressive, with many stating it looked “beautiful”.

As a result, Lyla decided to sell the table, flogging it for $300.

She’s now trying her hand at making something different for the space, getting ideas from items that are in stores but without paying the eye-watering prices.
