Courtney Love received the Icon Award at the 2020 NME Awards this week. And, during the ceremony – which took place at London’s O2 Academy Brixton – the Hole lead singer revealed during her acceptance speech that she was celebrating 18 months of sobriety.

“I didn’t prepare any speech, sorry I didn’t mean to be disrespectful,” said Love. “I woke up this morning and I asked a friend like ‘Is it the 11th?’ because also today, the honor of picking up this wonderful f—k you thing [the award is shaped like a middle finger] … I also have 18 months sober today.”

The 55-year-old added that she couldn’t believe it, and “that’s pretty wild.” Love then concluded her speech by thanking the crowd and telling them that she was very honored.

In addition to her speech, Love also posted a message on Instagram for her 941K followers, writing that she looked through different images of her life with her team to find pictures for the NME awards. Love said that the images she found were “tragic, weird, beautiful, wild, amazing, crazy.” But, none of it was small.

Love noted what an honor it had been to work with people who love her, and she was happy to take the award because “it’s cute.” Love also posted some of the pictures from her life, with one being a snap of the Celebrity Skin singer with her late husband, Kurt Cobain.

Love’s struggles with alcohol and drug abuse have been regularly documented for decades – well before Cobain committed suicide on April 5, 1994. Both Love and Cobain were addicted to heroin, and after his death she would often show up to events completely wasted, like at the 1995 MTV VMA’s, when she crashed an interview with Madonna.

The singer was also treated for an overdose of Oxycontin in 2003. And in 2005 during the Comedy Central Roast of Pamela Anderson, Love claimed to be “clean and sober,” but she slurred her words throughout her entire speech.

Love’s problems with addiction have caused her to have a rocky relationship with the daughter she shared with Cobain – Frances Bean. When he died, Kurt Cobain told Courtney Love in his suicide note to keep going for Frances, who was just one-and-a-half years old at the time.

“Please keep going Courtney for Frances,” wrote Kobain. “For her life will be so much happier without me. I love you. I love you.”
